24160 SAINT-RAPHAEL
The village of Saint Raphaël is perched on a ridge at an altitude of 288 metres and overlooks the valleys of the Isle, the Loue and the Auvézère. The site offers a remarkable panorama, allowing to contemplate castles and surrounding hamlets.
Founded in the 11th century, Saint-Raphaël is a priory of the royal abbey of Saint-Pierre de Tourtoirac, which was undoubtedly one of the largest monastic buildings in Périgord. The church's pillars are listed as Historic Monuments. The tomb of Saint-Rémy, accompanied by a statuette bearing the effigy of the Saint healer, was for a long time the object of pilgrimages: some people came to implore the protection of the Saint against hail, others came to ask for the healing of their limbs suffering from rheumatism, gout and for greater effectiveness, rub them on the stone of the tomb.
